At a very basic level, Dock-High docks are used to simplify getting "stuff" into and out of a building - generally from or to a truck trailer ... or train car. The main alternative is grade-level building access - i.e. being able to drive into a building so that the "stuff" you work with can be lifted from and onto whatever you are using to transport your "stuff."
